Coming from the north
Make your way to Salzburg (for example via the A8) and turn onto the highway to Villach.
You’ll have to pay an “entry fee” to bring your car into Austria. In 2008, a 10-day sticker cost €7.60.
If you take the Salzburg – Villach highway you will have to pay toll at the Tauern-tunnel. Alternatively, you can take the toll-free “Bundesstrasse 99” (national highway 99) between Radstadt and Rennweg.
From Villach, take the Karawanken-Tunnel (more toll) or the toll-free Wurzen-Pass to Slovenia.
Once in Slovenia, more road toll has to be paid. The minimum is 35 € for half a year on Slovenian highways. Follow the signs to Ljubljana.
You need to drive into Ljubljana until you meet the City Highway. Turn left at the T-junction when coming from the highway. Go straight into the city until you see signs for Postojna or Koper. Turn right and then drive downwards onto the city highway. Follow the signs to Postojna to reach the main southern highway.
Drive down south until you reach the “Unec” highway exit. From there it’s another 30km to Osredek.
Exit the highway and drive to Unec and further on to Rakek and “Cerknica”.
Before you pass the Cerknica town sign, turn left to “Begunje”. If you miss that turn, continue to Cerknica town centre and take the left turn to Begunje there.
Drive through Begunje until you come to a T-intersection at the supermarket and post office. Turn right and follow the sign to “Rakitna”.
Continueon the Rakitna-road through several villages until you make a conspicuous 180-degree turn. At the following intersection there is another sign pointing to Rakitna to the left. Do NOT follow it this time, follow the sign to “V. Bloke” to the right.
The next villages are Topol and Cajnarje.
After Cajanarje the main road continues across a bridge further into the valley, but you take a side road up the hill to “Sveti Vid”(the sign says Sv. Vid). On older maps from the communist era, this village is called Zilce.
Drive through Sveti Vid, past the church and the shop until you find many signs pointing to the right and a single one pointing to the left that says“Osredek”.
You’ll reach Osredek after about 5 km. Drive through the village, past the chapel, until you see a garbage container. Turn right after the container, and then immediately left.
Pass a large house (number 21), and turn right into the courtyard. You have arrived – it’s Judita and Joze Strle’s house. The houses in front of it aren’t entirely wrong either – they belong to Joze’s brother and mother.
