Im Unterlauf fliesst die Donau durch Rumänien und bildet am Schwarzen Meer das Naturparadies des Deltas. Als zweitgrösster Strom Europas sammelt die Donau, gemeinsam mit 120 Nebenflüssen, ihr Wasser aus einem Einzugsgebiet von mehr als 805.000 qkm, dem 13. Teil unseres Kontinentes.

Das Donaudelta ist eine geschützte Wildnis von Schilfinseln und Binnenseen, Eichenwäldern - verschlungen mit Lianen und Kriechpflanzen - sowie einsamen Dünen. Es ist ohne Überteibung eines der letzten verbliebenen Naturparadiese Europas. Vögel, Flora und Fische in einer in Europa unvergleichlichen Fülle beherbergt dieses Gebiet auf einer Fläche von 5.640 qkm. Das Donaudelta dehnt sich über 160 km in Nord-Süd-Richtung aus. Ein Viertel (ca. 100.000 ha) stehen unter dem Schutz der UNESCO als "Biospären- Reservat". Durch Versandung schiebt sich das Land auch heute noch jährlich um fast 40 m in das Schwarze Meer hinaus.

Begrenzt vom Donaudelta im Norden, dem Schwarzen Meer im Osten, Bulgarien im Süden sowie der Donau im Westen liegt die landwirtschaftlich genutzte fruchtbare Ebene, die Dobrudscha (andere Schreibweisen: Dobrudja, Dobrudgea, Dobrogei, Dobrogea) mit Lagunenseen (insbes. dem Biospären- Reservat des Razim-Sees) sowie Steppen- und Waldgebieten. Die Dobrudscha zählt zu den herausragenden Gebieten europäischen Naturerbes.
