Der nördliche Arm des Donaudeltas, der Chilia-Arm,
ist mit einer Länge von 104 km der jüngste und längste Arm. Der Chilia-Kanal stellt die natürliche Grenze zu den selbständigen Staaten Moldawien und der Ukraine dar und verteilt sich auf ca. 40 Flussmündungen, die ein kleines eigenes Mini-Delta in der Ukraine bilden. Am Chilia-Arm liegt das besonders geschützte Naturreservat Letea mit Sanddünen und subtropischen Wäldern.

  Der mittlere Arm des Donaudeltas, der Sulina-Kanal,
ist der Hauptarm, der von den meisten Ausflugs- und Handelsschiffen genutzt wird und fast gerade durch die Mitte des Deltas fliesst bei einer maximalen Breite von 250 m. Der Sulina-Kanal wurde Ende des letzten Jhs. begradigt, zu einer Wasserstrasse ausgebaggert und die Ufer befestigt. Dadurch reduzierte sich die ursprüngliche Länge von bisher 92 auf heute 64 km. 
An Maljuk, Mila 23 (Altarm) und Crisan vorbei mündet der Sulina-Kanal am alten Hafen der gleichnamigen Stadt Sulina an der Küste des Schwarzen Meeres. 
Der Crisan-Kanal verbindet den Sulina-Kanal mit dem Schwarzen Meer. Der hier angeschwemmte Sand sollte zur Glasherstellung genutzt werden. Reste dieses gewaltigen Industrieprojektes - das nie fertiggestellt wurde - sind noch heute in der Siedlung Caraorman zu sehen.  

 

  The middle arm of the Danube Delta, the Sulina Canal,
the main arm, will be used with the most of touristic and business boats. He almost straight by the middle of the delta with a maximal width of 250 ee. The Sulina Canal was been straight at the end of the last hundred years, dredged to a water street and the banks secures. Therefore the original length reduced from previously 58 on today 40 miles.
Past at Maljuk, Mila 23 (the old arm) and Crisan the Sulina Canal will be end at the old harbor of the city Sulina at the coast of the Black Sea.
The Crisan Canal connects the Sulina Canal with the Black Sea. The deposited sand should used to the glass manufacturing. Remainders of this powerful industry project - that was been never completed - are to see still today in the settlement Caraorman.

  Der südliche Arm des Donaudeltas, der Sfantu Gheorghe Kanal,
(in alten Aufzeichnungen Sfintu Gheorghe Arm genannt) windet sich 109 km durch das Delta und mündet bei der alten Siedlung Sf. Gheorghe in das Schwarzen Meer. Dieser  älteste Kanal stellt die südliche Grenze des Donaudeltas zur Dobrudgea dar und bietet tausenden von Vögeln Nitzplätze.
Am Sfantu Gheorge Kanal ist das Wahrzeichen des Donaudeltas zu sehen, die fünf Hügel von Bestepe, 20 km von Tulcea entfernt. Sie sind mit 242 m die höchsten Erhebungen des Deltas. Geographisch gehören diese Hügel zum Gebiet der Dobrudscha. Mahmudia und Murighiol sind die einzigen menschlichen Siedlungen an diesem Kanal bis zur Mündung an der gleichnamigen Siedlung Sfantu Gheorge in das Schwarze Meer. 
Sf. Gheorge ist in der rumänisch-orthodoxen Kirche der Schutzpatron des Donaudeltas.

 

  The southern arm of the Danube Delta, the Sfantu Gheorghe Canal
(in old records named Sfintu Gheorghe arm) flows 68 miles through the Delta and will be ended near the old settlement Sf. Gheorghe into the Black Sea. This oldest canal placed that southern boundary of the Danube Deltas to the Dobrogea and offers thousands of birds there original places.
At the Sfantu Gheorge Canal the landmark of the Danube Delta is to been see there: the five hills of Bestepe, 13 miles back from Tulcea. With 242 ee they are the highest elevations of the Delta. Geographically these ones belongs to the zone of the Dobrogei. Mahmudia and Murighiol are the only human settlements at this canal up to their end at  the village Sfantu Gheorge into the Black Sea.
Sf. Gheorge is in the Romania Orthodox Church the protection patron of the Danube Deltas.

  Die Menschen 
des Donaudeltas führen ein sehr einsames Leben. Innerhalb des Biospärenreservates leben 100.000 Einwohner (22 je qkm). Im Delta hingegen leben nur 25.000 Einwohner (weniger als 5 je qkm). Die Bevölkerungsdichte des Donaudeltas ist die kleinste in ganz Europa. Slawen, Ukrainer und Lepovener haben sich hier angesiedelt.

 

   The people 
in the Danube Delta introduce a very solitary life. Within the biosphere reserve there will be live  100.000 inhabitant (22 of each qkm). On the other hand in the Delta there are only 25.000 inhabitants  (less than 5 of each qkm). The population density of the Danube Delta is the smalest in entirely Europe. Slavs, Ukrainas and Lepovenas are living here.

  Die ornithologische Tierwelt  
des Deltas ist reich sowohl an Vögeln, die ihre Nester in Kolonien bauen (=autochthonische Vögel) als auch an Durchzugsvögel, die das Delta nur für eine bestimmte Zeit als Gast besuchen. Mindestens 300 Vogelarten leben im Donaudelta. Pelikane, Stelzenläufer, Kormorane, Adler, Bienenfresser, Silberreiher, Rothalsgänse, Kraniche, Löffler, Seeraben, Enten, Nachtreiher. 10 Arten sind heute vom Aussterben bedroht. 

 

   The ornithological animal world  
of the Danube Delta is empired with birds, who construct her nests in colonies ( = autochthonische birds) as well as passage birds, who visit the Delta only for certain times as guests. At least 300 types of birds lifes in the Danube Delta. Pelicans, Black-winged Stilt, Cormorants, Eagles, Bee-eaters, Great White Egret, Red-necked Gooses, Crane Oaks, Spoonbills, Seeraben, Ducks, Night Herons. 10 types of them are threatened today by extinction.

  Flora
Da kein Mensch in die Natur eingreift, kann hier die überwältigende Pflanzenwelt des Deltas überleben, insgesamt ca. 1.150 Arten. Es gibt sogar eine insektenfangende, fleischfressende Pflanze, die Aldrovandato. Schlängelnde Lianen und Kriechpflanzen überwuchern die Galeriewälder aus Eichen, Weiden und Schwarzpappeln. 
Im krassen Gegensatz dazu schmücken Kolonien gelbblühender Wasserschwertlilien und weisser Seerosen die Seen. Schwimmende Schilfrohrinseln (= Plauri) schaffen Schutzgebiete für Silberreiher und versorgen die Dorfbewohner mit einer ertragreichen, alljährlichen Ernte. Mit etwa 750 qkm  beiheimatet das Donaudelta das grösste zusammenhängende Schilfrohrgebiet der Erde. 

 

  Flora

In den Gewässern der gewundenen, schilfbestandenen Kanäle des Deltas verstecken sich mindestens 160 verschiedene Fischarten, sowohl Süss- als auch Meerwasserfische. Dazu gehören der grosse Stör, Hecht, Barsch, Karpfen. 

  

  Fishes
